Jr. Sting Shock Opponents
The Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Atom AAA travelled to Brantford on Friday night to take on the 99ers in Game 1 of their play down series. The team were slow to start the game but shocked the Brantford faithful winning the game 3-1.

The “bus legs” seemed to have been a factor in the first period of play as the Jr. Sting could only muster one shot on the Brantford goaltender that came late in the first period of play. However, at the other end of the ice, Lambton goaltender, Blake “Fozzy” Foster turned away 12 shots to help keep the score knotted at zeros heading in to the 2nd period of play.

The Jr. Sting found themselves down a man early in the 2nd when Petrolia Oilers call up, Brayden “Fry Guy” Fryfogle, took a hooking penalty at the 13:47 mark. While the 99ers were trying to set something up on the powerplay, Derek “Tugger” Esselment broke up a passing play and broke in alone on the Brantford goaltender. Esselment slide the puck between the 99ers goaltender’s pads and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead shorthanded. However, Brantford would tie the game up just 4:01 later, on their first shot of the period. The teams continue battling at both ends of the rink but neither team could find the back of the net.

Once again, this young Lambton team found themselves shorthanded early in the 3rd when captain Wesley “Brooksy” Brooks took a hooking penalty just 13 seconds in. However, once again the team seemed to have read a page of the 99ers playbook because centre Ryder “Niener” Nienhuis intercepted a pass from the Brantford defence and scored Lambton’s second shorthanded goal of the game. The Minor Atoms would add to their lead just 3:16 later when Owen “Peety” Peters scored from Wesley “Brooksy” Brooks and Andrew “Chacunsongoût” Lemieux. The Jr. Sting took a couple of late penalties but were able to hold off the Brantford efforts. Goaltender, Blake “Fozzy” Foster, turned aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced.

Come out and cheer on Lambton’s youngest AAA team, Sunday, February 17th, at 12pm when they take on the 99ers, in Game 2 of the series at the RBC Center.
