Minor Atoms Lead Series 3 Points to 1
The Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Atom AAA team leads the Windsor Jr. Spitfires 3 points to 1 in their first to 6 point Consolation playoff series.

Last Friday night, Lambton travelled to Central Athletic Arena in Windsor to take on the Jr. Spits in Game 1 of the series. The team took to the ice and dominated from the first minute of play. It only took the team 20 seconds to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Andrew Lemieux picked up an Austin Harper “dump in” behind the net and stuffed the puck passed the Windsor goaltender. The Jr. Sting would keep up the pressure, cycling the puck down low in the Windsor end, and were rewarded once again, midway through the period when Carson Peer scored from linemate Nicholas Medeiros and defenseman Eric McDonald.

The flood gates would open up in the second period when Lambton scored 3 straight powerplay goals from Nicholas Medeiros (2) and Austin Harper. Assists on these 3 goals were awarded to defenseman Owen Chambers, and wingers Andrew Lemieux and Lucas deLorenzo. Unfortunately, Windsor would cut the lead to 5 – 2 early in the third before Andrew Lemieux scored Lambton’s 4th powerplay goal of the game from captain, Wesley Brooks. The Jr. Spitfires would score one more late in the third but the Jr. Sting would hold on for the 6 – 3 win. Goaltender, Blake Foster, was strong between the pipes, turning aside 28 of the 31 shots he faced.

Game 2 took place on home ice on Sunday afternoon. Lambton came out flat right from the drop of the puck and found themselves down 2 – 0 early in the game before centres, Austin Harper and Derek Esselment scored 43 seconds apart in the final minute of the first period. Lambton went in to the second period tied at 2 but struggled to get anything going offensively as they spent half the period shorthanded. However, Jr. Sting winger, Lucas deLorenzo would riffle a shot, short side, to give Lambton their first lead of the game, 3 – 2. Assists on the deLorenzo goal were given to his linemates, Owen Peters and Ryder Nienhuis. Unfortunately, Windsor would reply and tie the game up once again just 33 seconds later.

Lambton came out buzzing to begin the third. Even though shorthanded, the Jr. Sting tandem of Andrew Lemieux and Carson Peer would streak down the ice and score Lambton’s 4th goal of the game when Lemieux fed a beautiful “saucer” pass to Peer who buried it passed the Windsor goaltender. Lambton would go ahead by 2 just 1:19 later when Austin Harper returned to the ice from serving a penalty and roofed a shot on the Windsor net. Owen Peters would get his 3rd assist of the game, while Nicholas Medeiros got his 2nd of the game on the play. Unfortunately, Windsor would claw their way back into the game and had the game knotted at fives by the time the final buzzer sounded. A 5 minute overtime settled nothing and both team split the 2 points. Goaltender Kaden Gray was spectacular in goal stopping 37 of the 42 shots he faced.

The team looks to finish off the Jr. Spits this weekend when they travel to Windsor for a Saturday night game and play host on Sunday morning at the RBC Centre.
