Major Atoms Compete in Nations Cup Tournament
The Major Atom Jr. Sting travelled to Lansing, Michigan to participate in the 2012 Nations Cup for Team Canada.
They opened tournament play against the Pittsburgh Aviators. In a close game the Sting lost 2-1. Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the 2nd period of play. The Jr. Sting responded with a goal which was called off. Pittsburgh added a second goal in the 3rd period of play to go ahead 2-0. The Sting rallied with a goal by Evan Wammes, assisted by Ethan Kerby and Jackson Cole to bring the game within one but could not get past the goal post ringing 3 shots off the post.
In the rest of round robin play, the Jr. Sting were defeated 4-0 by Cleveland Barons, 12-0 by St. Louis Blues and 6-0 by Cleveland Jr Jacks.
The Major Atoms finished regular play in 5th seed and played a rematch against the Cleveland Barons looking to assist team Canada in winning the 2012 Nations Cup. The Barons came out ready to play and netted their first goal of the game in the first minute of play. The Sting battled back and Tristen Konrad added a short- handed goal to end the first in a 1-1 tie.
Cleveland went ahead in the second period but Jackson Cole, assisted by Evan Wammes evened the score at 2-2. The third period of play saw the Jr. Sting add 2 goals to go ahead 4-2. Blake Butler and Evan Wammes both added unassisted goals. Cleveland did not give up easily and added their third goal of the game. Wil O'Leary Dilosa responded, assisted by Ethan Kerby and Blake Butler to advance the Sting to 5-3. The Barons attempted to steal the win in the final minutes, adding one last goal of the game but the Sting were able to hold on to their lead and win 5-4.
Despite the win by the Jr. Sting, Team Canada was defeated by Team USA in the battle of the Nations Cup.
