MIDGET’S LOSE A TIGHT ONE BUT BOUNCE BACK
The Midgets headed into Waterloo last Saturday and a lackluster effort and a lack of discipline during the second period cost them two points.

Joe DeSena scored two in the first to give the Jr. Sting a 2-1 lead with an even strength goal assisted by Andrew Martin and Ben Morrison followed two minutes later by a Power play goal assisted by Morrison.

The second period however was all Waterloo as the Midget’s took 14 minutes in penalties. Waterloo outshot the Jr. Sting 25-3 in the period and scored three including two power play goals. If not for some stellar goaltending by Kent Taylor Waterloo may well have run away with the game at that point.

The Midget’s got back on their game plan in the third but could only manage one with Kraig Durco scoring a nice power play goal on a great feed from Keith Arnold. Taylor again made two huge saves to give his team a chance when Waterloo players got in all alone, but for the second game in a row the Midget’s fell short.

Final 4-3 Waterloo

Saves – Kent Taylor 46, Waterloo 26

Jr. Sting 4, Huron Perth lakers 1

After a couple of hard practices and a renewed commitment from the players to get back to the things that made them successful early on in the season, the Midget’s welcomed Huron Perth into the Hive Saturday.

Right from the warm up the coaching staff could tell the team was back on track and a great play by Ben Morrison from behind the net set Chris Griffith up for his first of two on the afternoon just 47 seconds into the game. The Jr. Sting continued to carry the play with some great forchecking by the energy line of Mitch DeRush, Calvin Hughson and Matt Vince who kept the Lakers deep in their own end for most of the period. HP would get on the board when an odd bounce fooled goaltender Steven Taylor. Joe DeSena would put the Midget’s back in the lead during the power play when he fanned on his first attempt and then slid a slow one by the fooled Laker goalie. Assists to Griffith and Mark Macpherson. Shots at the end of one were 22-10 in favor of Lambton.

The Jr. Sting really turned it up in the second but could only find the back of the net once when Zac Lewis fed the puck right of the face off to David Veluz who rifled the puck past the HP goaltender.  Mid way through the period Morrison would show the Lakers he is not only a great set up man but also a tough customer when he went a round with HP’s 6’4 220lb defenseman with both getting in some good shots. Although only putting one on the board during the period the Jr. Sting had two more called back and several additional great chances turned back by the Laker goaltender. Strong play by Matthew Doidge, Kraig Durco and Mac Colasimone went uncounted on the scoreboard but not in the coaches minds. Shots after 2, 40-17 for Lambton.

Unlike the past few games Lambton never took a shift off and continued to pressure the Lakers in the third with Joe DeSena doing the hard work before making a great pass to Griffith who went top shelf for his second goal of the game and first three point game of the season.  When HP did venture into the Lambton end, they were met with some very physical play by the entire defensive squad with Dylan Brooks, Andrew Martin, Randy Hicks and Keith Arnold all making some particularly memorable hits. The offensive squad also contributed to the defensive effort with some great back checking and shot blocking with special mention going to Matt Vince and Mac Colasimone. The Lakers put in one last scoring effort but Taylor held them at bay and the Midget’s won this one in convincing style.

Final 4-1 Lambton

Saves – Steven Taylor 21, HP 51
