DESENA’S HAT-TRICK ENOUGH FOR THE WIN
Sarnia Sept 22nd– Lambton Jr. Sting Major Midget’s vs Cambridge Hawks

Joe DeSena’s short-handed goal in the dying minutes extends the major Midget’s unbeaten streak to six games. For the second game in a row, DeSena picked off a pass while killing a penalty and went in all alone to score his third goal of the game.

Unlike earlier games the Midget’s looked a little tentative at the start of this one and quickly fell behind in shots as Taylor and the defense played strong to keep the game even.  As the game wore on the team started to find their legs and by the end of the first had taken control of the period. In what would become a signature of this game,  the second period saw Cambridge come out strong to start the period. Finally 12 minutes into the second period Clay Williams gave a little drop pass to DeSena who rifled a shot over the Cambridge goalies glove. Cambridge stormed right back on the power play when their sniper got in behind the defense and went top shelf on Taylor from eight feet out.  The seesaw battle of the second period continued when a nice breakout pass from Brad Campbell allowed Ben Morrison to Spring DeSena down the right side on a two on one. DeSena looked pass the entire way but as soon as the goalie opened up expecting the pass across, DeSena fired the puck through the five hole for his second. Cambridge came right back again less than a minute later to once again tie the game before the teams headed back to their rooms for the flood.

The battle continued throughout the third when the Midget’s got into some serious penalty trouble. Some great shot blocking by Mac Colasimone, a great diving play to spoil a breakaway by Mark Macpherson and some solid goaltending by Kent Taylor kept the game tied going into the final few minutes.

With less than three minutes remaining DeSena picked off a pass on the Hawks blue line while short handed and went in all alone making no mistake as he scored his third of the game and the goal that would prove to be the game winner. Again Coach Taylor’s Jr. Sting is showing that they will do whatever it takes to win this year. The entire team is blocking shots, taking hits and standing up for each other.
