The Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Atom AAA team went undefeated over the weekend playing in
Windsor on Saturday night and at home on Sunday afternoon.
On Satuday night, the Jr. Sting played a low scoring affair in Windsor. Even though they played most of the first period short handed, the Sting had some great opportunities to get on the board. The line of Andrew Lemieux, Derek Esselment and Carson Peer made some nice passing plays but just could not bury the puck past the Windsor netminder. Lambton got the lead late in the second period after Sting goaltender, Kaden Gray, made a spectacular toe save and they were able to quickly transition into the offensive zone. Carson Peer picked up the garbage and scored his first of the season from Ryder Nienhuis and Austin Harper. However, the Sting could not hold the Spitfires off the score sheet in the third. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
On Sunday afternoon, Lambton hosted the Huron-Perth Lakers at the RBC Centre. The team was eager to put a win in the wins column but found themselves down 1-0 after the first period. However, they came out flying in the second, scoring 4 goals. At 10:14, while on the power play, Sting centre, Derek “Tugger” Esselment, made a near impossible shot that somehow found the back of the net for his first of the season. An assist on the play was given to winger Austin Harper. Just over 2 minutes later, the Sting got their first lead of the game on another power play marker. Winger Andrew Lemieux roofed a shot after centre Lucas deLorenzo won an offensive zone faceoff. The Lakers came back with 2 quick goal to take a 3-2 lead but before the end of the period, Lambton would score 2 more. Lambton’s 3rd goal was scored by Eric “Dozer” McDonald, unassisted and their 4th goal of the game was scored by Lucas deLorenzo after some really nice work down low by wingers Andrew Lemieux and Jake “JMAC” MacLean. The third period was dominated by the Lakers and goaltender, Blake “Fozzy” Foster, stood on his head while the Lakers out shot the Sting 23-1 to help lead his team to victory. Final score : Lambton 4 – Huron-Perth 3.
