Another Tough Weekend for the Minor Atoms
On Saturday, October 27, 2012, the minor atom AAA team traveled to Brantford to take on the 99ers at the newly renovated Gretzky Complex. The team, led by goaltender Kaden “KMAN” Gray, came away with a 3-3 tie. Special teams played a huge part in the game for the Jr. Sting going perfect on the penalty kill (including a 4 minute double-minor) and were 2 for 3 on the power play.

Lambton was held off the score sheet in the first period of play and found themselves down 1-0. By the second period fared much better and the team was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes of play. Scoring in the second period were Owen “Peety” Peters and Lucas “Lukey” deLorenzo. Assists on both goals were awarded to Derek “Tugger” Esselment, Peters and deLorenzo. The 99ers came out flying scoring just 16 seconds into the third period of play. Lambton would answer right back, just 1:56 later, on a power play goal by Ryder Nienhuis. Nienhuis picked up the garbage in front of the net after Andrew “Chacunsongoût” Lemieux tipped a Nicholas “Nicky” Medeiros point shot.

Final score:         Lambton              3              Brantford            3

On Sunday, the team traveled to Waterloo to play their second game in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately, the Wolves were ready to take a bite out of the Jr. Sting and scored just 11 seconds into the game. Waterloo was awarded their second goal of the game late in the first period when the referee whistled the play dead when he thought that the Wolves had scored when in reality goaltender Blake “Fozzy” Foster made a spectacular backhanded stick save. This goal seemed to deflate any hopes the Jr. Sting had and the team ended up losing 8-1. The lone goal was scored by Lemieux in the second period of play from defensemen Matthew Moore and Medeiros.

Final score:         Lambton              1              Waterloo            8

The team is looking forward to participating in their second tournament of the season this coming weekend when they travel to Chicago to take part in the Bauer World Hockey Invite. Go Sting Go!
